2007 nissan altima review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The nissan altima has been totally redesigned for 2007. It looks more like the maxima now. It's a couple of inches shorter on the outside, but has more room on the inside, including a spacious trunk. Fold-down rear seats allow the trunk to expand into the cabin for carrying big long things. the object of the redesign was to bring the feel and power of a luxury car to this everyman's midsize sedan, and nissan has succeeded, at least with the altima model that has the v6 engine and all the options, including plush leather. It makes 270 horsepower, more than what's available in other midsize cars (excluding turbocharged or expensive sports sedans), along with 258 pound-feet of torque. The price for that power: the v6 requires premium fuel and gets 22/28 mpg. another thing that makes the altima stand out is its new optional cvt, or continuously variable transmission. It's the only automatic transmission available in this car, and it's a winner with its manual mode, which allows six speeds or ranges. A cvt improves gas mileage because there's less internal friction. the handling is true, and the suspension is quite firm without ever being harsh. It inspires confidence. It's a match for rough pavement and is steady and predictable in extreme situations. The altima also comes loaded with safety features. an intelligent key comes standard in the altima. This might be convenient for some, but it leads to new problems, having to do with the memory of the human brain and confusion of the car's electronic brain. lineupthe 2007 nissan altima is initially available as five models: the 2. 5, 2. 5s, 2. 5sl, 3. 5se and 3. 5sl. Air conditioning does not come standard. the 2. 5s adds air conditioning, a six-speaker sound system, remote keyless entry, power sideview mirrors, and speed-sensitive intermittent wipers, among other smaller things. the 2. 5sl uses the continuously variable transmission, and adds leather interior with heated front seats and power driver's seat, moonroof, alloy wheels, dual-zone temp controls and rear air conditioning vents, among other smaller things. the 3. 5 se uses the powerful v6 engine with the six-speed manual gearbox and cloth interior. It adds abs, traction control, and 17-inch alloy wheels, plus heated sideview mirrors and other features. the 3. 5sl has most of the things listed above, but goes back down to 16-inch alloy wheels. It adds high-intensity xenon headlights, foglamps, bluetooth hands-free phone system, and nine-speaker bose cd/mp3 sound system. a technology package includes the navigation system, a rearview monitor and satellite radio. On the higher priced models, anti-lock brakes are standard and electronic stability control is optional. Abs includes electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist. Electronic stability control, which nissan calls vdc (vehicle dynamic control) is optional on 3. 5 models. walkaroundthe new 2007 nissan altima looks quite stylish, especially for a mid-size car. The body has gotten a makeover, and features a number of pleasing changes. Like some other new cars, in particular lexus, the fender flares are edgy and extend farther than before, allowing the body itself to be narrower and offer less frontal area. The gap between the tires and flares has been tightened. Overall aerodynamics are improved from 0. 33 to 0. 31, thanks to many things as always, not least the more steeply sloped windshield. the wheelbase has been shortened by nearly an inch, and the overall length cut by 2. 5 inches, with shorter overhangs. The cowl was moved forward and rear glass rearward, which allowed for no overall decrease in cabin space. The beltline is low so there's more side glass, which adds to the roomy feeling. the headlamps and taillamps appear almost exotic, certainly elaborate. As for the taillamps, nissan says they cost nearly as much as the headlamps (so don't back into anything!), and they definitely do look expensive. They're covered with clear plastic like the headlamps, and contain a silver ray-gun looking cylinder with the red lamp, plus a round white beam for the backup light and a big orange piece for the parking lamp and turn signal. interiorin redesigning the altima, nissan engineers were assigned to create more cabin space, and given one inch less to work with, on account of the reduction in wheelbase. They met their goal by stretching the distance between a-pillar and c-pillar, thus shortening the cowl and deck. There are 1. 7 inches less legroom in front, but 3. 1 inches more in the rear, and that's a lot; however, 0. 8 inches of rear headroom has been lost. Trunk space has grown from 15. 6 cubic feet to 17. 9. the seats are relatively large. They feel firm and longer and higher than in last year's models. We've been in many luxury cars that didn't feel this classy inside. More soft materials are used, for touches like padded armrests, and the overall level of refinement is higher than with the former altima. It's the common and practical tripod design, with speedo in center, tachometer on left and gas and temp on right. The lettering is sharp, white on black, with red needles. the center stack is neatly designed, with three dual-zone hvac vents at top over the sound system and good knobs, leading down to usable storage slots and the transmission lever, in this case for the cvt. The space for the big glovebox was created by downsizing the air conditioning unit, but nissan says there's no compromise in ac effectiveness; in fact, nissan says the ac is best in class, thanks to improved airflow and a quieter fan. the intelligent key is standard on all altima models, but we don't think it's so smart. It may be true that women don't like to bother with putting a key in an ignition, as the manufacturers say, and like to keep their keys in their purse at all times; but it's also true that since intelligent keys have been invented, there has been a rash of dead batteries. It's left on the accessories mode, and drains the juice. Not even with a passenger totally devoted to the challenge, while we were stuck in traffic.

2007 pontiac g5 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The ride is a bit firm but not uncomfortable. However, we found the handling of the gt mediocre. pontiac describes the g5 as a five-passenger coupe, but limited rear legroom make carrying five passengers a serious challenge. Like most coupes, the back of the cabin is best used for parcels. air curtains are optional and we recommend them. They provide life-saving head protection in a side-impact crash and federal crash tests show they are needed on the g5. underneath the new pontiac body are the mechanical underpinnings used on the chevrolet cobalt coupe introduced in 2005. Essentially, the g5 is simply pontiac's version of the cobalt. lineupthe 2007 pontiac g5 is available only as a coupe, which means two doors and a smallish back seat. It comes in two versions. the g5 14,725) comes with air conditioning, power windows and door locks, am/fm/cd, fold-down back seat, height-adjustable driver's seat and remote/keyless entry. The standard transmission is a five-speed manual. The standard model features the fe1 or smooth-riding suspension. the g5 gt 18,375) adds anti-lock brakes, upgraded audio, xm satellite radio, cruise control, and fog lamps. The standard transmission is a five-speed manual. options include automatic transmission 850); air curtain side airbags 395); remote-vehicle start 190); sunroof 750); anti-lock brakes 400); and onstar 695 on the gt and part of $1,090 security package on the base model). safety features include frontal air bags; front seat belts with pretensioners (in a crash these remove the slack). Anti-lock brakes are optional; abs can help drivers avoid accidents by allowing them to maintain control of the steering at maximum braking effort. We recommend getting it. That said, from the front, side or rear the g5 has a cleaner and smoother look than pontiacs past, which tended to be cluttered with stick-on body cladding. to an increasing number of automakers, a family resemblance in design is a goal. They see it as part of establishing a marketing tool called a brand identity. We found the cloth material on the seats was handsome. there is plenty of legroom for two people up front but the back seat is barely suitable for a six-foot adult for a short trip across town. It is an excellent location, however, for parcels. all the controls are easy to find and use but there is a severe shortage of storage bins and trays. the driver's seat is adjustable for height. However, it seems to work better for raising short drivers than lowering it for those who are tall. The problem is that when the seat is lowered all the way to accommodate a tall driver the seat cushion tilts a bit forward. It is as if there is a half-hearted effort to dislodge its occupant, which seems a bit rude. like many coupes, which favor a low roof as they go for a streamlined look, the g5 has somewhat narrow windows. Some people like that because it makes them feel as secure as a turtle in a shell. Others find it is slightly confining. one problem is poor visibility over the driver's left shoulder. Big roof pillars and a small rear window combine to make it hard to see vehicles coming up to pass. air curtains are one option that should be purchased. These cost $395 and cover the side windows (front and back). The idea is to provide head protection in a side-impact crash. Some studies have shown such head protection greatly increases the chance of survival. When the national highway traffic safety administration did side-impact crash tests on the g5 without the air curtains safety officials noted that, had a human been in the driver's seat, serious head injuries would have been likely. When a second g5 with the air curtains was tested there was a big improvement, although the pontiac still did not fare as well as a 2007 honda civic coupe with air curtains as standard equipment. onstar is a nice security blanket. This option combines a global positioning system and a cellular telephone (far more powerful than a hand-held cell phone) to put the driver in contact with an onstar center which is manned 24/7. The onstar center can tell where the vehicle is located and can provide help, ranging from a tow truck to directions. In case of a crash severe enough to deploy the airbags the system will automatically call the center so help can be sent even if the occupants are incapacitated. we liked the sunroof. On some cars they tend to scoop outside air and funnel it into the vehicle as if attempting to duplicate one of the opening storm scenes from the wizard of oz. That is not the case on the g5. There is so little turbulence it is possible to open the sunroof on a 20-degree day and enjoy the sunlight without freezing, with the heater turned up. the trunk is rated at 13. 9 cubic feet which is competitive in this segment. For carrying more cargo the rear seat can be folded down. driving impressionas with most sporty cars the ride in the pontiac g5 gt is somewhat firm but encounters with potholes and tar strips do not result in any serious discomfort. The ride is comfortable enough for day-to-day commuting even in the midwest where the roads are rough. the steering is somewhat heavy and the effort increases during turns. This doesn't quite meet the standard of an upper-body workout but for some people it will come close. The steering is tight, however. The car begins to respond. the g5 gt feels secure and fairly responsive on gentle or sweeping turns. However, when the turns are tighter and the speed increases the gt objects. Suddenly it feels nose-heavy, stubborn and not sporty. Major competitors, like the civic, now come with five-speed automatics. The extra gear means a better chance at providing good acceleration at all times but better fuel economy. That means it was striving to get the most out of the engine. for maximum power pontiac recommends premium fuel but says the gt will not be damaged if 87 octane is used. The gt gets an epa-rated 24 mpg city/32 highway. pontiac did a great job on the feel of the brakes. The pedal was firm but it was easy to slow either a little or a lot. Also, the front of the g5 didn't dip too much under hard braking. That gives it a balanced, secure feel. the summer performance tires that come on the gt are unsuitable for winter use. They offer so little grip that they are likely to worry even those experienced in winter driving. In packed snow (5f to 20f), we found extremely poor traction even on flat terrain. With little grip, the gt has trouble turning and stopping. The enhanced traction control doesn't solve the problem. Halfway up one hill all it did was to cut the power as it tried to help the wheels regain traction, but the effect was that all the momentum was lost. Putting snow tires only on the front would help with turning, but with far more slippery tires on the rear wheels the handling could be treacherous. It would be nice if pontiac would give consumers interested in the gt the choice of the performance tires or regular, all-season radials. summarythe pontiac g5 gt is okay, but unremarkable. The pontiac g5 is based off the chevrolet cobalt and provides all the same benefits and drawbacks of a practical small sedan. The g5 comes in two trims: base and gt. It has a semi-independent rear suspension, rear spoiler, and steel wheels standard. The pontiac g5 is an all new model for 2007.
